This is a popular scam that victims don’t expect. A fake tech support tech lures you in by contacting you by email or phone, then the scam begins.
Fake Support Technicians
A fake support technician will contact you and they will inform you that your laptop or computer has a problem that has been detected. The fake support technician will tell you that your computer has many problems, system errors, and licensing problems. The fake support technician may even have your screen turn black on your computer. The fake support technician will convince you to pay them to fix the issues. They might even ask you to give them access to your computer so they can repair it as this is an aggressive scam so they can access your secure information.
Hosted Website Scams
One of the most popular and common fake tech support scams occur on hosted websites. You could be surfing the net and out of nowhere comes a pop-up message or your computer screen goes black or blue. This is when you believe your computer has picked up a virus. You will then see a message from Apple or Windows (depending on the computer or laptop you have). There will be a number for you to call, but beware, because this number may be an expensive phone call. The fake technician will now try to have complete access to your computer. They may even try to persuade you in paying a high fee to have the repairs made.
What if you have become a victim to the fake tech support scams? According to Microsoft you should do these things:
- Turn off all remote management tools or uninstall these tools.
- Use your antivirus to clean the computer.
- Update your computer with the latest updates, and this includes the security updates too.
- All passwords should be changed.
- Report the scam to your credit card providers.
- Keep watch on any activity that is unusual.
- Restore your computer to an earlier date.
